I’m James.

Right now I’m a Senior UX designer for the BBC, based in London.

James Bowen

Product design is what I do. With a focus on responsive web and mobile devices, I fight to balance user experience and business needs through the full creative process.

From strategy, user experience, interface design, visual design, prototyping, and iteration, I thrive when I’m solving hard problems and seeing them all the way through.

I have 6 years professional experience. In that time, I’ve been involved in every part of the process — defining product goals and strategy, solving user and business problems, building comprehensive design systems, growing teams, working with engineers, building interactive prototypes, extensive user testing, and even pushing code.

I believe the best products involve design from the very beginning, and strive to build experiences that are are as enjoyable as they are valuable.

BBC – Senior UX Designer

2015 – Present

  • Creating and iterating designs, prototyping experiences, sharing expertise and ideas with people from design, product and  tech teams.
  • Defining the user experience using varied tools: sketches, concepts, user journeys, wireframes and navigational prototypes for multiple screens.
  • Working closely with developers, including them end to end in the design process, so that the team becomes one seamless unit.
  • Planning and organising user research studies
  • Collaborating with the wider UX&D team to make sure we’re making the most of the BBC’s Global Experience Language, and are aligning experience across the BBC estate
  • Create high-fidelity visual and interaction elements of BBC user experiences
  • Prioritisation of my own workload, and understanding where work comes from so that it can be broken down into solvable problems.
  • Champion for Accessibility within the UX&D and wider team
  • Using data to inform designs, looking into ways of improving the product from customer feedback or analytics

The Simply Group – Digital Designer

2012 – 2015

  • Full responsive redesign of all 6 ecommerce sites
  • Designing & creating marketing & e-marketing materials on a range of projects.
  • Management of email marketing for all 6 stores. Including planning, creating and analyzing results
  • Supervising and mentoring junior designers, creating work-flows and project planning to meet tight deadlines
  • Pro-actively communicating with senior project stakeholders, internal departments, external clients, suppliers and other third parties to keep projects on schedule
  • Creating brand guidelines that can consistently communicate a brand’s visual identity
  • Working with a design brief from the director/marketing manager and/or external client to ensure that requirements and objectives are met within the required deadline
  • Development and research of new online products including websites, micro-sites, mobile specific sites and apps
